Lipa for Business is discontinued

Lipa for Business is discontinued

An early Lightning pioneer for stationary retail disappears from the market

With lipa for Business, a solution is disappearing from the market that was an easy way for many merchants to start accepting Bitcoin lightning payments in retail stores. According to a recent announcement to business customers, lightning payment services ag is in proper liquidation. The lipa website now also states that the services will no longer be offered, the private customer wallet has already been discontinued at the end of 2025 and lipa for Business (PoS) will end in mid-March 2026.

The news marks the end of an offering that played a visible role in the European lightning payment landscape early on. lipa for Business was designed as a POS application for merchants and was intended to enable stores to accept lightning payments directly via a smartphone without a traditional card terminal. The official product page highlighted, among other things, the use of existing mobile devices, the transaction overview in the dashboard and the option of allowing employees to checkout but not to access the entire wallet.

Simple Lightning acceptance for retailers

lipa for Business was particularly attractive for smaller businesses because the solution did not require expensive hardware and had the lowest possible barrier to entry. Merchants were able to accept payments in Bitcoin Lightning, track transactions in the dashboard and export data for accounting purposes. The lipa product page also stated transparent fees of 0.98 percent when converting to fiat and no fees when receiving in Bitcoin.

In doing so, lipa addressed a key problem for many brick-and-mortar retailers: anyone who wanted to accept Bitcoin needed a solution that was simple, mobile and practical for day-to-day business. This is exactly where lipa for Business came in.

What now applies to existing users

According to the notification sent to business customers, payments can no longer be received via lipa for Business with immediate effect. Existing credit balances should be transferred in full to a self-controlled wallet by 15.03.2026 at the latest. After this date, the system will be shut down permanently and access to the application will no longer be possible. If you have any questions, please contact lipa support at support@lipa.swiss. The website adds that support will be available until the end of March.

For affected merchants, this means above all: act quickly, secure credit balances and restructure existing payment processes.

More than just the end of a product

The end of lipa for Business is more than just the discontinuation of a single app. It also shows how young and dynamic the market for Bitcoin and Lightning payment solutions still is. Good products emerge, develop further – and sometimes disappear again.

This is particularly relevant in payment transactions. Merchants need reliability, stability and long-term prospects. When providers disappear, this not only affects technology, but also operational processes, accounting, employee training and trust in new forms of payment.

Nevertheless, the trend remains intact

Even if lipa for Business is discontinued, the fundamental trend remains: Bitcoin via Lightning is technically very well suited for fast, direct and cost-effective payments in commerce. Solutions such as lipa have helped to make this possibility visible and practical. They have shown that Bitcoin payments not only work online or theoretically, but can also be used at the store checkout in everyday life.

In this sense, lipa for Business was an important building block for Bitcoin acceptance in stationary retail – even though the project is now coming to an end.

Our conclusion

lipa for Business was a recommended entry-level solution for many merchants, especially when a clear separation between private and business use was desired. The app combined ease of use with a structure tailored to merchants and helped to easily integrate Lightning payments into everyday business life.

It is regrettable that this solution is now disappearing. At the same time, it underlines the importance of a resilient ecosystem for Bitcoin payments: with open standards, multiple providers and solutions that merchants can rely on in the long term.

Nevertheless, lipa’s contribution to the visibility of lightning payments in retail remains.
